From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein Document Release is Divided.
Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided physical binders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
